The 2008 Obesity Society Grants Program

The New Investigator Research Grants
Recognize six new investigators, defined as individuals who have received a doctorate within the past five years and who currently hold full-time, entry-level positions (e.g., post-doctoral fellow, instructor, assistant professor) at an established academic/research institution. Applicants may request up to $25,000.

An initial one-page letter of intent cover page, description of project, and NIH-Style biosketch should be submitted for review by an interdisciplinary committee. PLEASE NOTE: The scientific project including AIMS and hypothesis should be described on a maximum of 1 (one) page on Institutional letterhead along with this cover sheet and the biosketch.

Deadline for submission of the two-page letter of intent and NIH style biosketch is 11:59pm Eastern Time on Monday, June 16th, 2008.

Wrigley Grants
Include a request for applications (RFA) that addresses the potential health effects of chewing gum. Applications may address the effects of gum chewing potentially related to the regulation of appetite (hunger, satiation, cravings etc), food intake, body weight (losing or maintaining weight, or metabolic control. This RFA is supported by the Wrigley Science Institute. Two Grants of up to $25,000 each are awarded.

Travel Grants
As its commitment to young investigators in the field of obesity research, The Obesity Society will award travel grants of $750 each to attend the annual meeting of the society in Phoenix, AZ. Potential winners will be selected from the ranking of the submitted abstracts and will need only to return a form signed by their institution acknowledging that the winner is either a graduate student or has received a PhD or MD less than 5 years ago. Letters to the potential winners will be sent out later this summer.
