The Doubly Labeled Water Method: A technical course for learning how to apply and optimize your measurement of energy expenditure

General Information |  Faculty  |  Agenda

Whether you’re new to the doubly labeled water (DLW) method or looking for a structured refresher, our comprehensive workshop on this unique stable isotope method “The Doubly Labeled Water Method” will provide you with the skills and tools you need.

If you want to start using the doubly labeled water method, you will learn how to equip your laboratory, design your studies and address Institutional Review Board (IRB) issues. If you have already equipped your lab and are ready to start using the DLW method, you will learn how to handle specimens from collection to analysis. Even if you have been using the method for years, you will learn the many small details that will expand your expertise.

By the end of the day, you will understand:

  • The theory and calculations of the method
  • How to minimize research costs while getting the most out of your data
  • How to best fit the method to your protocol
  • How to identify errors in the isotope ratio laboratory

Who Should Attend?

  • Individuals involved in energy metabolism research
  • Clinical investigators and basic scientists using animal models
  • Lead investigators
  • Clinical coordinators
  • Field team members and laboratory staff

Faculty

Our three senior faculty have nearly 100 years of combined experience with human and animal research using the doubly labeled water method and have experience with every imaginable application from migrating birds, astronauts in space, subjects at all turns of the life cycle, and patients suffering from trauma or chronic disease. They have encountered problems that most investigators have not yet thought of and their experience can help you through these problems.

  • Dale Schoeller, PhD, Professor of Nutritional Sciences, University of Wisconsin-Madison
  • John Speakman, DSc, Director of the Institute of Biological and Environmental Sciences, University of Aberdeen, Scotland, UK
  • Klaas Westerterp, PhD, Professor of Human Energetics, Maastricht University, The Netherlands

Our three junior faculty have recently completed establishing their doubly labeled water laboratories. They have identified the key questions and decisions facing new investigators and staff and learned how to get the most out of their efforts.

  • Gertjan van Dijk, PhD, Professor of Integrative Neurobiology of Energy Balance, University of Groningen, The Netherlands
  • Peter Walter, PhD, Director of the Clinical Core Stable Isotope Mass Spectrometry Laboratory, National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), National Institutes of Health
  • Yosuke Yamada, PhD, Postdoctoral Research Associate, Institute for Physical Activity, Fukuoka University, Japan
