Silver Spring, MD – Today, the Obesity Society, the leading professional and scientific organization dedicated to the study of obesity, announced details of the policy forums it is hosting in Denver and Minneapolis/St. Paul in conjunction with the Democratic and Republican National Conventions. The forums, entitled “The Challenge of Obesity for Policy Makers: Recommendations for the Next Administration,” will be co-sponsored by the Universities of Colorado and Minnesota, the Mayo Clinic and George Washington University and will feature roundtable discussions of policymakers at both the national and local levels, in addition to representatives of the Party nominees.

Obesity Society President Applauds Inclusion of Obesity in Democratic Party Platform
Obesity Policy Forums to be held in conjunction with National Party Conventions
Silver Spring, MD – Gary Foster Ph.D., President of The Obesity Society, today applauded the action of the Democratic Party Platform drafting committee in acknowledging for the first time in any national party platform the importance of addressing the obesity epidemic in the United States.
The Writing Committee for the Platform finished its work on Thursday and has sent to the full Platform Committee proposed language. Dr. Foster said, "We are pleased to see a major political party recognize the importance of obesity to the health of Americans and to the health care system overall. Nearly every week, we see the accumulation of evidence of the health and fiscal problems arising from obesity. We applaud the work of the Writing Committee and we hope the Republican Party platform will also acknowledge this important issue."

Citizen Petition Requesting FDA to Treat Weight Loss Claims for Dietary Supplements as Disease Claims
The Obesity Society has joined with the American Dietetic Association, Shaping America's Health, and GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare, LP in filing a petition, April 17, 2008, to the Food and Drug Administration about the unsubstantiated weight loss claims made by manufacturers of natural weight-loss supplements.

Obesity As a Disease: The Obesity Society Resolution
The Council of the Obesity Society has issued a resolution, which "concludes that it is the official position of The Obesity Society that obesity should be declared a disease. The Obesity Soicety will henceforth refer to obesity as a disease and encourages others to do so."
The resolution and a white paper, A White Paper on Evidence and Arguments Commissioned by the Council of The Obesity Society, appear in the June 2008 issue of Obesity.

Obesity Is Only Disease Singled Out by Wall Street Journal Council of CEOs
At the Wall Street Journal's first annual CEO Council, a meeting of more than 100 CEOs and members of Congress held in Washington, DC, recently, the Council released a prioritized list of issues facing the incoming administration and the new Congress, which included Obesity as the sole top-priority disease requiring imminent attention. The Obesity Society would like to applaud the inclusion of the disease among the priority issues facing the country today and would also extend its praise to the CEOs and members of Congress at the meeting for recognizing obesity as a major health problem.
The Healthcare Task Force of the CEO Council, which included Angela F. Braly, President and CEO, WellPoint, Denis A. Cortese, MD, President and CEO, Mayo Clinic, Jeffrey B. Kindler, Chairman and CEO, Pfizer Inc., Daniel Vasella, MD, Chairman and CEO, Novartis, AG, and Senator Max Baucus (D., Montana), identified obesity as the number one healthcare issue. |
