Silver Spring, MD, April 22, 2008:

Citizen Petition Requesting FDA to Treat Weight Loss Claims for Dietary Supplements as Disease Claims

The Obesity Society has joined with the American Dietetic Association, Shaping America's Health, and GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare, LP in filing a petition, April 17, 2008, to the Food and Drug Administration about the unsubstantiated weight loss claims made by manufacturers of natural weight-loss supplements. The petition requests the FDA to consider weight-loss claims as "disease claims" in light of the serious disease risks overweight can cause, requiring them to be supported by credible scientific evidence in order to gain FDA approval. The petitioners state that by "...taking the actions requested in the petition, FDA would protect millions of Americans who are currently relying on uproven and ineffective dietary supplements to lose weight."
