next months' newsletter.
| NAASO Merger |
 |
|
The Executive Committee last year began to explore
the possibility of merging NAASO, CORE and AOA
(American Obesity Organization) with the intention of
creating a more robust organization with the capacity
to promote greater research through fundraising,
advocacy and education. It was felt that fundraising
for research, in particular, would be more effective
through a merged organization.
This effort has involved a meeting between the
leadership of the two organizations last year and a
general discussion during the ICO meeting in Sa=F2 Paolo,
Brazil over the summer in which NAASO members
expressed support for the concept. The NAASO
Council then created a Task Force, chaired by David
York, to provide guidelines for a merger and report to
Council. Based upon that report, Council authorized
continuation of discussions with AOA regarding merger.
The most recent meeting between NAASO and AOA was
held in Washingington in March. A NAASO Task Force
consisting of Samuel Klein, President; Barbara Corkey,
President-elect; and David York, Task Force Chair, met
with leaders of AOA to plan the steps required for a
merger of the two organizations. There was agreement
in principle on the guidelines provided by the NAASO
Task Force and the needs of AOA. Follow-up meetings
are planned with a goal of bringing a proposal to the
membership as soon as possible.
In this difficult task, the help and support of our
members is needed. Comments, concerns and
suggestions related to a potential merger are
welcome. Samuel Klein, MD - President Barbara
E.
Corkey, PhD - President-Elect

| NEW Online CME - Second in a Series |
 |

The National Heart, Lung, and Blood
Institute (NHLBI),
in cooperation with the North American Association for
the Study of Obesity (NAASO) has developed two free
online continuing medical education modules on the
assessment and management of overweight and obesity
in adults. These modules provide health care
practitioners with practical information based on a
thorough review of the science that was published in
the Clinical Guidelines on the Identification, Evaluation,
and Treatment of Overweight and Obesity in Adults:
Evidence Report.
The courses review the importance of weight
management and the health risks associated with
overweight and obesity, what patients should be
treated and how they should be treated, the
motivations that lead to successful weight loss, and
appropriate treatment strategies. Learn about these
important issues through the use of case studies and
the treatment algorithm. The courses are available on
the NHLBI Web site at
http://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/obesitycme/, as well as
through the NAASO Website at
http://www.naaso.org. The courses are free and are
available on line all of the time. Cin=E9-Med, Inc. has
designated each educational activity for a maximum of
2 category 1 credits toward the AMA Physician's
Recognition Award.
Don't forget to enroll in Office Management of
Obesity, NAASO's first online CME course. Course
participants are able to bookmark their places and
return to the course at any time. Watch this site.
More Continuing Medical Education programs are being
