Greetings!
By invitation of Secretary of Health and Human
Services, Tommy Thompson, obesity leaders
met with top level government officials on Wednesday,
July 30 in Washington,
DC. The private meeting was held to discuss health
topics having a direct impact on the obesity field.
Tommy Thompson, troubled by America's obesity
issues, will continue meeting with representatives of
several different health, science and industry groups to
formulate a unified solution to battle the obesity
epidemic. NAASO was represented by
George Blackburn, MD, PhD and former NAASO
presidents Claude Bouchard, PhD, James Hill, PhD,
Xavier Pi-Sunyer, MD
and others also attended. We will keep you up-to-
date on more
developments of this obesity focused meeting.
| Call for "Hot Topic" Abstract Submissions |

NAASO is now accepting Hot Topic abstracts for poster
presentation at Annual Meeting.
This opportunity is geared for the truly "Hot Topics" in
that they present the latest breaking science based on
data not available prior to June 6.
Please submit your Hot Topic abstract as a MS word
document attachment to anae@naaso.org. Abstracts
must be limited to 2,000 characters (including spaces).
Hot Topic abstracts will not be included in the
Obesity
Research Abstract Supplement but will be
considered
for publication at a later date.
Deadline for Hot Topic Abstract submission is
August 29, 2003.
Don't forget to register for Annual Meeting 2003.

| NAASO Announces ACCME Accreditation |

We are pleased to announce that the Accreditation
Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) has
certified that NAASO has fulfilled the accreditation
requirements set forth by the Accreditation Council for
CME and is accredited as a provider of Continuing
Medical Education for Physicians.

NAASO's efforts to provide comprehensive and high-
quality obesity education programs," states Dr. Sam

senior position can be daunting. As part of NAASO's
ongoing effort to improve the service it provides to its
student members, a new section on the website is
available to help connect you with the position you
want. The "position wanted" postings will provide
NAASO student members with a powerful, and free,
opportunity to connect with a wide audience of
potential employers, and will complement the
existing "positions available" page
(http://www.naaso.org/employment/).
Your electronic vita will be posted for 3 months on the
NAASO website unless notification that the ad is no
longer required. To post a "positions wanted" notice,

only available to NAASO Grad student/Post-doc

| NAASO Congratulates 2003 Award Winners |

NAASO is proud to announce the following 2003 award
recipients: The Tops Award, recognizing
singular achievement of contribution to research in the
field of obesity, is being awarded to Stephen
Heymsfield, MD. This award is made possible by
an annual grant from Take Off Pounds Sensibly
(TOPS). Dr Heymsfield will receive a $5,000
cash prize.
Randy Seeley, PhD, has been named the 2003
recipient of the Lilly Scientific Achievement
Award, recognizing excellence in an established
research career. This award is made possible through
an annual grant from the Eli Lilly Pharmaceutical
Company. A $5,000 cash prize accompanies this award.
The Stunkard Lifetime Achievement Award will
be presented to George A. Bray, MD. This
award honors those who have made a lifetime of
outstanding contributions to the field of obesity.
Dr Bray will receive a $1,000 cash prize.
The recipient of the George Bray Founders
Award is Barbara Hansen, PhD. Dr.
Hansen is being recognized for her significant
contributions advancing the science for understanding
and treating obesity. A $1,000 cash prize accompanies
this award. The Awards will be presented during a
special Annual Meeting session on Monday, October 13,
8:00 am.

| Case-Study of the Month - Call for Submissions |
|
|
This spot is reserved for your Case-Study of the Month
report. You are
invited to send obesity-related unique and peculiar
cases encountered during the treatment of obesity.
This information sharing is expected to increase the
dialogue among the membership and promote
future collaborative projects, leading to the
advancement of knowledge in the field.
SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS
The submission should not be more than 4000 words,
and should include Abstract (200 words),
Introduction, Case Report, Discussion and References
sections. Please follow Obesity Research
style guide for citing references. In addition, a 50 word
summary / short abstract should be included.
This 50 words note will be published in Obesity -
NAASO's newsletter, and will serve to attract
attention of newsletter readers to the case report,
which will be published online in a PDF format.
Please send your submissions electronically as a
Microsoft Word document attachment to the
Case Study editor, Dr. Nikhil Dhurandhar (E-
mail:NikhilDhurandhar@wayne.edu). Submissions
will be reviewed and the editor's decision will be final.
Accepted case reports will be published online,
with links provided in Obesity, the new online
newsletter of NAASO and on the NAASO website,
www.naaso.org.
