Greetings!

Until the Super Bowl, one of the most talked about stories of the week was featured in the Obesity Research January issue. The article, "State-Level Estimates of Annual Medical Expenditures Attributable to Obesity," by author Eric Finkelstein, was quoted in nearly every national and regional news/media source in the country. Dr. Corkey, several NAASO spokespersons, and the author are still busy being interviewed.
The online version of the article contains supplemental material not available in the print version. So, if you haven't had a chance to see all of the information that generated such wide media coverage, go to www.obesityresearch.org

In keeping with a Super Bowl theme, NAASO is getting ready to kick-off Phase 1 of its new Member Forum. This Forum replaces our former ListServ and has been developed to better serve our Members' needs and requests. Read about the details below. Phase 2 will launch next month.

    Introducing 2 new Regional Editors
Robert T. Ferraro, MD, CDE - Southwest
Dr. Ferraro is the Medical Director of the Southwest Endocrinology Associates (SWENDO) which he founded in 1996 with the idea of creating a multidiscplinary team approach to care and treatment for diabetes and other endocrine and metablic disorders.
A NAASO member since 1990, Bob is active at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine and VA Medical Center where he lectures and supervises fellow, residents and students. Welcome Dr. Ferraro by sending your Southwest regional news to rtf@swendo.com.

    Kathleen Keller, PhD - East
Dr. Keller has been a post-doctoral fellow at the New York Obesity Research Center for the past 2 years. She received her doctorate in nutritional sciences from Rutgers University in 2001. Dr. Keller's research is focused on establishing and defining links between taste sensitivity, food preference, and obesity in young children. Kathleen has been interested in refining methods to assess taste intensity, liking, and fullness intensity in children. It is hoped that refining these methodologies will assist future research into understanding why some children become obese and what we can do to prevent this development in these children.
Kathleen has graciously taken over Regional Editor duties from Dr. Myles Faith (thank you Dr. Faith). Please send your Eastern regional news and announcements to Dr. Keller at kk2092@columbia. edu.

    from the East
Kathleen writes: Jennifer Nasser, PhD, of the Obesity Research Center in New York, NY received a 2 year grant from the International Life Sciences Institute in Washington, DC (2204 -2206). The title of the grant is "Effect of Glycemic Response to a Preload on Food Reinforcement Measured by Operant Computer Task in Lean and Obese Humans."

    from the Southwest
Bob Ferraro reports on the 2nd Annual University of New Mexico " Advances in Obesity Treatment and Research" Conference presented by the Department of Internal Medicine and the Institute for Public Health of the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center.
The main theme of this year's symposium is Obesity Prevention. A Public Forum has been organized where scientists, educators, politicians and urban planners will exchange ideas for combating obesity.
The conference will be held Feb 27, 2004 in Albuquerque, NM and the Public Forum on Feb 28, 2004.
A special presentation by 1000 Friends of New Mexico, consortium of community groups and academia, is scheduled.

Management of Persistent Vomiting Following Gastric Restrictive Procedures

Patricia S. Choban, MD, FACS, FCCM, Department of Human Nutrition, The Ohio State University, Columbus, OH

    ABSTRACT:

Persistent vomiting following gastric restrictive procedures for weight management is a well described event. The initial focus of the evaluation is to exclude mechanical outlet obstruction. In the absence of mechanical problems, antiemetics are employed with dietary counseling. Management, when these actions fail to resolve the problem, is the focus of this case report.
