NAASO has become well-known for its quality education programs. During the last 5 months, more than 3,600 professionals have participated in NAASO education events.     Now Accepting Online Abstract Submissions
    It's time to start submitting your research for presentation at the NAASO 2004 Annual Scientific Meeting, November 14 - 18, Las Vegas, Nevada. The online abstract submission site will be in operation until June 25, 2004 at 11:59 PM Eastern Standard Time. Abstracts will not be accepted after this deadline.
    NAASO encourages submission of all abstracts dealing with obesity-related issues. Notification of abstract acceptance will be sent via e-mail to corresponding authors in mid-August. Abstracts will be published in the October 2004 Obesity Research Annual Meeting Abstract Supplement.

    Congratulations to Samuel Klein, Immediate Past President of NAASO, on his newest appointment as President of the American Society for Clinical Nutrition.

    Richard N. Bergman, PhD 2004 Man of Distinction
    Dr. Bergman was honored by the American Diabetes Association April 22, 2004 for his Lifetime Achievement in Diabetes Research. Congratulations Dr. Bergman!

    Obesity Research Online reaches new heights
    During the 1st quarter of 2004, online usage of Obesity Research was up 124% over last year. Monthly traffic to Obesity Research Online in these first 3 months averaged an impressive 332,768 hits. Thank you to all Obesity Research readers and our valued authors for this notable achievement.

    New book co-authored by Dr. Albert Stunkard
    Written by Kelly C. Allison, Sara L. Their and Albert Stunkard, Overcoming Night Eating Syndrome, A Step-by-Step Guide to Breaking the Cycle, was released May 1, 2004. This book is the first to focus on night eating syndrome (NES). NES is a condition in which individuals consume more than 50 percent of their daily calories after eight o'clock in the evening.
    Published by New Harbinger Publications, the book is available in paperback and is 200 pages.

    Medical School is First to Establish Obesity Management Course
    Duke Medical School is one of the first in the country to develop an Obesity Management Course for medical students. Spearheaded by Dr. Jarol Boan, assistant Professor Medicine and Surgery, the month- long course will cover the causes of obesity and treatment of obesity.

    UMN Honors Centenarian Ancel Keys, MD, PhD
    The First International Ancel Keys Symposium on Nutrition and Health: The International Obesity Epidemic will be held on Sunday, September 12, 2004 and Monday, September 13, 2004 at the Minneapolis Hilton Hotel. The Division of Epidemiology and School of Public Health have designed this Symposium to honor Ancel Keys, MD, PhD, who celebrated his 100th birthday this year. Dr. Keys' work will be celebrated followed by a day of talks on obesity, its causes and prevention by internationally eminent speakers.     New Therapeutic Boarding Schools for Overweight and Obese Youths
    Aspen Education Group announced a new division, Healthy Living Academies, to establish and operate boarding schools for overweight and obese youths. Beginning this summer, Healthy Living Academies will also operate summer camps and outdoor programs. Heading up Healthy Living Academies' clinical program is Dr. Daniel S.     Paul Boisvert reports from Laval University in Quebec
    9,6M$ ($7.2M US) for the Laval Hospital Research Center in Qu=E9bec
    The Quebec government funded the Laval Hospital for the expansion of the actual Institute of cardiology, pneumology and obesity . This contribution will help to increase clinical research of the institute, the only one in Canada grouping cardiology, pneumology and obesity at the same hospital. Adding two floors to the actual research center will confirm Quebec City as a leader in the world in biomedical research including obesity . The investment was announced by the Minister of Health, Dr Philippe Couillard, with the participation of Dr Denis Richard, director of the research center.

    Canadian Consensus Clinical Practice Guidelines
    Obesity Canada will develop a Canadian Consensus Clinical Practice Guidelines on the Prevention and Management of Obesity with the effort of an expert committee coming from all over the country, and chaired by Dr David Lau. The goal of this initiative is to develop evidence-based consensus clinical practice guidelines (CPG) for health professionals in Canada. This is an important multidisciplinary initiative which will hopefully have a major impact in the prevention and management of obesity in Canada. The Faculty Meeting was held on April 17th, 2004 in Toronto.

    Elizabeth Parks writes that the Department of Food Science and Nutrition, University of Minnesota announced the appointment of Dr. Allen Levine as Department Head, effective September 1, 2004.
    Dr. Levine is a professor at the University of Minnesota in the Departments of Psychiatry, Psychology, and Surgery, and an Adjunct Professor in Food Science and Nutrition. He is Director of the Minnesota Obesity Center and has been Deputy Associate Chief of Staff for Research at the Minnesota Veterans Administration Medical Center for over 15 years.

    Harvey Anderson (University of Toronto), Adam Drewnowski (University of Washington, Seattle), Jonathan Purnell (Oregon Health Sciences University), Randy Seeley (University of Cincinnati) gave talks at a meeting, "Satiety and Weight Management" held at UC Davis on April 26-27.

    The University of Nevada School of Medicine is now housed in the Division of Medical Nutrition (head by Sachiko St. Jeor) in the Department of Internal Medicine. They have established a new Center for Nutrition and Medical Disorders, which is a demonstration clinic for development of clinical services (specializing in weight management) and research.

    Janet T. Peterson (Linfield College, McMinnville) presented a symposium on body composition and immune function at the annual North West American College of Sports Medicine in March.

    Congratulations to David E. Cummings (University of Washington, Seattle) who won a Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers and will be given the award next Tuesday (5/4) by President G.W.Bush in a ceremony at the White House.

    Mexico
    Jorge Gonzalez-Barranco reports that a very useful educational tool for Spanish language physicians, nutritionists and other health care providers is now available. The comprehensive book, Obesity, was published in Mexico City in the fall of 2003. More than 14 authors collaborated to produce this impressive volume covering all areas of obesity. More than 30 chapters cover important topics such as nutrition, epidemiology, metabolism, hormone regulation, treatment and eating disorders.

    President's Message


    To the membership:

    On Saturday April 17th the Strategic Planning Committee met in Washington, DC for the first time. Members of the Committee are: Barbara Corkey, Louis Aronne, Thomas Wadden, Jennifer Lovejoy, Edward Bernstein, Samuel Klein, Richard Bergman, George Bray, Steven Heymsfield, and James Hill. Valuable assistance was provided by Susan Fried. Louis Aronne was elected Chair.

    A situational analysis of the current state of obesity and of NAASO was undertaken. This will be completed in June and will consist of about five sections:
    1. An overview to briefly cover the current state of the epidemiology, economic, science, advocacy and clinical state of obesity.
    2. Responses to the epidemic of obesity by organizations outside of NAASO, including the government.
    3. The historical and current situation of NAASO, including strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats to NAASO
    4. Membership needs.
    5. Allies, enemies and powerful players in the obesity arena.
    A second meeting is planned for July to continue discussion of our future options, to define our preferred options and to begin to formulate an implementation plan.

    The Strategic Plan will be presented to Council in November and discussed at our Annual Business Meeting. The Business Meeting will be held during the Annual Scientific Meeting in Las Vegas, Nevada.

    It is the committee's intention to be as responsive and inclusive as possible. Please check this newsletter and the NAASO Website for constant updates on the progress of our Strategic Planning initiative. NAASO belongs to all its members and the Strategic Planning Committee welcomes any thoughts, questions or concerns you have. Anything you wish considered may be sent to the NAASO office or communicated to any of the members.
