Steve Smith reports that an updated version of The Obesity Gene Map is published on-line.
The Obesity Gene Map web site was developed to address the problems associated with the generation of increasingly detailed information on the location and properties of a growing number of obesity- related genes. It is an extension of the annual publication in Obesity Research that was started almost 10 years ago.
Data from published peer-reviewed papers was used as the starting point for constructing the Obesity Gene Map database. This information was then extensively cross-referenced internally, then linked to external resources such as OMIM, LocusLink and GenBank. The project is led by Claude Bouchard, Ph.D. and Eric Snyder, PhD. from the Human Genomics Laboratory at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center, Baton Rouge, LA. Brandon M. Walts also from the Human Genomics Laboratory, provides support and maintenance of the database. Key contributors to this project include Drs Tuomo Rankinen from PBRC, and Louis Persuse, John Weisnagel and Yvon Chagnon from Laval University in Quebec City.
If you have not been to the website; take a look, you will be pleasantly surprised.

Hot Topic Abstract Submission Now Open

NAASO is now accepting Hot Topic Abstracts for presentation at the 2004 Annual Scientific Meeting.

Deadline: Sept 24, 11:00 pm, Eastern.
    Submission fee: $50.

Hot Topic Abstracts will only be accepted electronically as an MS Word document attachment.

Hot Topics represent late breaking science and are based on data not available prior to June 25, 2004. Abstracts are not eligible if the paper has been presented at another national or international meeting or will be published prior to the NAASO Annual Meeting.

Authors are not required to be members of NAASO. There is no limit to the number of abstracts an author may submit. However, an author of an abstract may appear as the lead author on only two abstract submissions.

Abstracts must be limited to 2,325 characters (including spaces). The standard for acceptance is much higher for these abstracts than for abstracts submitted prior to June 25. All abstracts submitted to the North American Association for the Study of Obesity are peer-reviewed through a blinded review process. Originality of work, adequacy of data, and clarity of exposition are the determinants in the selection of abstracts. Accepted abstracts will be presented as posters. Abstracts will not be published in the October Obesity Research Annual Meeting Abstract Supplement but may be published at a later date.

Only the corresponding author can withdraw or receive information on an abstract. Expenses associated with the submission and presentation of the abstract are the responsibility of the presenter. Presenters must pay the registration fee for attendance at the meeting. Presenters will be able to register at pre- registration rates. If you no longer plan to attend the meeting because your abstract was not accepted for presentation, your registration fee will be refunded upon request.
A letter of notification and appropriate accompanying materials will be mailed only to the Corresponding Author by the middle of October 2004.

Please e-mail your abstract as an MS Word document attachment to: naaso@diabetes.org
