New Secretary/Treasurer Elected to Council

In the recently held elections for the position of Secretary/Treasurer of NAASO, The Obesity Society, Caroline Apovian, MD, won the majority of votes cast. She fills a vacancy created by the election of Gary Foster, PhD, to the position of Vice President of the Society. Dr. Apovian assumes the position immediately, and her term of service as Secretary/Treasurer will run through October 2008.

NAASO, The Obesity Society, Seeks a New Executive Director

The search is underway for a new Executive Director of The Obesity Society. A detailed position profile provides more information about this exciting opportunity for a qualified individual who can raise the visibility of the Society as North America’s premier organization in the field of obesity.

Do You Qualify for Fellow Status?

The Obesity Society encourages Regular members to upgrade their membership to Fellow status. Fellows can hold office and vote for officers and constitutional changes. Fellows must be residents of North America and meet at least one of the following criteria:

  • Conducted original research in areas relating to obesity, resulting in senior authorship of five or more scientific papers in English-language, peer-reviewed journals. CV required (maximum of three pages).
  • Conducted independent original research without the opportunity to publish (e.g., industrial scientist). CV and letters of support from two NAASO Fellows required.
  • Demonstrated superior contributions to the obesity field through teaching, administration, or clinical services. CV and letters of support from two NAASO Fellows required.

Please mail your CVs and letters of support to the headquarters office of The Obesity Society or send electronically as Word document attachments to Krystal Fenwick.

Revision Allows Multiple PIs for RFA on the Diabetic Intrauterine Environment

NIDDK, NHLBI, and NCI have announced their participation in a pilot program at NIH to allow more than one principal investigator to be named on a research grant application. The RFA “The Obese and Diabetic Intrauterine Environment: Long-term Metabolic or Cardiovascular Consequences in the Offspring” has been modified to allow multiple PIs and to provide instructions for multiple PI applications.

According to NIH, the multiple PI model may be particularly suited to studies on maternal environment and risk for disease in the offspring because it is likely that these types of studies will employ the collaborative efforts of investigators from complementary disciplines. The ability to utilize the multiple PI model should facilitate such partnerships and ensure appropriate recognition of the contributions of equal partners.

The Obesity Society Welcomes New Staff Member

You may hear a new voice on the other end of the line the next time you call the headquarters office: Krystal Fenwick recently joined the staff as a Membership Assistant. Krystal will help Obesity Society members take full advantage of their memberships by processing incoming applications, helping existing members renew their memberships, and maintaining our membership database. Welcome, Krystal!
