February 2009 |
Dear Society Members,
This has been a busy month for the society! Preparations are moving apace for Obesity 2009. We launched our Call for Abstracts February 2 and abstracts have been flowing in to the new abstract submission site. I hope you will also find time to peruse the preliminary program, which is now available on our website at: www.obesity.org/obesity2009/. We are excited to inform you that we have expanded our accreditation to include continuing education credit to international physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses, CA nurses, and pharmacists. Additionally, the number of credits that physicians may earn is increased to 30 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™, while registered dietitians may earn a maximum of 30 hours of continuing professional education (CPE) units. For more information, please contact Jeanette Naiman ( jnaiman@obesity.org) in the National Office. We are currently seeking nominations for candidates to fill the vacant position of International Association for the Study of Obesity (IASO) representative on our council. We are looking for someone who has a strong passion for global and regional issues and who has the ability to travel internationally to biannual meetings. The IASO rep will serve on behalf of all 3 countries in the North American region, US, Canada, and Mexico, rather than following a country-specific perspective. Nominees must be fellows of the society and nominations should be submitted by March 13, 2009. Further details on how to submit your nominations can be found below.
Last but not least, I'd like to point your attention to two meetings that may be of interest: the International Hyperphagia Conference, June 4-5th 2009 in Baltimore, MD, and "Chronic Diseases in Childhood Obesity: Risks & Benefits of Early Intervention" to be held at Nationwide Childrens Hospital in Columbus, Ohio on April 2nd to 3rd, 2009.

Obesity 2009!
Mark Your Calendars for October 24-28, 2009! The 27th Annual Scientific Meeting of The Obesity Society will be held in Washington, DC, at the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel.
The Obesity Society Announces 2009 Call for Abstracts!
The 2009 Abstract Submission Site opened February 2 for this year's annual scientific meeting with a NEW abstract submission process. Several obesity researchers have already used the site to submit their abstracts. The Obesity Society uses a completely online system for abstract submission, review, and publication. All accepted abstracts will be published online, as well as in print. Abstracts, if selected, will be for oral or poster presentation. Abstracts for Obesity 2009 are organized into the following thematic tracks relating to obesity:
- Cellular and Molecular Biology
- Integrative Biology
- Clinical Studies
- Population Studies
- Clinical/Professional Practice
According to Jack Yanovski, MD, PhD, Chair of the Annual Program Committee for the society, "The Obesity Society's Annual Meeting is one of the best venues for presenting new clinical and basic obesity science." In fact, over 8 percent of submitted abstracts are selected as oral presentations, and Dr. Yanovski emphasized, "For young investigators submitting excellent abstracts, The Obesity Society's Ethan Sims Young Investigator Award and Pat Simons Travel Awards offer funds that support travel to the meeting."
Don't forget! You can find information and updates about Obesity 2009 on our website at: www.obesity.org/obesity2009/ |
